Philadelphia is an eclectic city of many identities. It is the colonial city that housed the continental congress and was a gathering place for the founding fathers who started the nation. The newly opened Constitution Center joins the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall as historic must-sees. The Franklin Institute science museum pays homage to Ben Franklin.
The city is also famous for its Mummer's Day Parade every January 1st where bands dress in elaborate costumes with feather and sequins to strut through the streets. Visit the Mummer's Museum for a closer look at this Philly tradition. It is a city with a tough guy image, epitomized in the Rocky movies. You can still visit the Philadelphia Art Museum, whose steps were famously shown in the movie during Rocky's training. Yet it is also home to Love Park, which has the famous LOVE statue, and a modern wonder of the world in the Kimmel Center known for its flawless acoustics. Philadelphia also has a bit of a weird side, with the Mutter Museum, housing all sorts of skulls, fetuses, and human oddities.
Go to the Rodin museum to see bronze casts of works by this famous artist, such as the Gates of Hell and the Thinker. Stop by a baseball game to see the Phillies and their mascot, the Philly Phanatic. Shop at an interesting collection of stores on South Street, and don't forget to grab a Philly cheesesteak while you're in town at either Pat's, Geno's, or Jim's. If you prefer healthier fare, try Chinatown or Reading Terminal Market. And then you can work it off at one of the largest city parks in the world, Fairmont Park, where you can play anything from soccer to ultimate Frisbee. Philadelphia has what you're looking for and is only two hours away from New York and Washington, D.C.!
